SHIVRAJYABHISHEK SOHALA

6th June, 1674 is one of the most important dates in the history of India since it was on this date that Shivaji Maharaj was crowned at Raigad Fort and was adorned with the title of ‘Chhatrapati’. The day is also important for he could lay the foundation of the sovereign state named as ‘Hindvi Swaraj’ by sowing the seeds of self-rule of the country by the countrymen themselves. He was determined to ensure that the people understood the true meaning of Swarajya and resisted any occupation and exploitation by outside invaders. He saw to it that the foreign invaders are uprooted from the homeland and the exploitation of the natives resisted forcefully. Despite meagre resources, he could instill self-confidence in the otherwise demoralized local people to fight against the foreign rule, especially Mughals, Adil Shahs of Bijapur and Qutub Shahs of Golconda. His recognition of this fundamental requirement found an echo about two centuries later when we stood up as a nation to demand Swarajya from the Britishers. Shivaji Maharaj was one of the most progressive and sensible rulers of India and thus commands maximum respect from the people all across the country even today. The ideals set by him are relevant to even present day society, especially in the fields of governance, military strategy, diplomacy, intolerance and respect for women. The contribution of Shivaji Maharaj is matchless for integration of the country and we all draw inspiration from him.
Realizing the deep meaning and relevance of Shivrajyabhishek ceremony of Shivaji Maharaj in today’s parlance, Shri Sambhaji Chhatrapati, his thirteenth descendant, started the Shivrajyabhishekmahotsav 18 years ago with a humble beginning Initially, only a few hundred people participated in the annual event. But, his persistent approach has turned this annual event into two days ‘Lokotsav’ witnessed by about 4 to 5 lakh Shivbhakts People from all over Maharashtra and adjoining States participate in the event willingly.
Akhil Bhartiya Shivrajyabhishek Mahotsav Samiti organizes the event with gaiety and splendor following the oriental tradition of Maharashtra.
